Studio Ghibli's animated film, When Marnie Was There (Omoide no Marnie), after its pre-nomination, managed to secure a place among the five films nominated for an Oscar in the Best Animated Feature category.

The film is based on the novel When Marnie Was There by Joan G. Robinson and has a special tone, as it is likely the last film the studio will release. This is due to the announcement of the film division and also to Hayao Miyazaki's retirement. Omoide no Marnie was written and directed by Hiromasa Yonebayashi, who is also responsible for part of the animation.

The film tells the story of Anna, a somewhat unhappy and lonely girl. One day, during a trip, she gets separated from her mother and finds an abandoned house, where she meets Marnie, with whom she forms a kind of friendship. However, Marnie is very mysterious, leading Anna to want to discover what secrets she is hiding.

Besides When Marnie Was There, the other nominees are Anomalisa, Inside Out, Shaun the Sheep Movie, and the big surprise, the Brazilian film The Boy and the World.
